Ways to discover the joy of dance
Dance is a powerful tool for self-expression and creativity. Martha Graham, a famous American modern dancer and choreographer, stated that “Dance is the hidden language of the soul”. Do you consider dance as a language? Can we really express ourselves through a non-verbal instrument showing, for example, anger, hope and love with movement?
Dance has a lot do with tradition too. Many dances originate from social gatherings and propitiatory rites. As you will see, Irish dance finds its roots in the history of Ireland.
Moreover, dance has a social relevance since it boosts opportunities to organize artistic gatherings, encouraging meetings between people who love sharing the same passion.
Finally, Irish dance has been recently renewed by a theatrical show.
Now let’s try to investigate on the mentioned topics and to develop our ideas working in 4 groups. Each group will have to choose one of the following tasks to fulfill and to post in this blog. Obviously, every task will be illustrated to the rest of your class. Here are the 4 groups:
Group 1: Caterina S., Pietro, Raffaella, Simone, Rossella
Group 2: Federico, Gisella, Maristella, Loredana, Caterina V.
Group 3: Lorena, Laura, Elena, Franco, Ciccio
Group 4: Gigi, Andrea, Fabiana, Giorgia, Paolo
Each group needs to be composed of a coordinator, an editor and researchers. You have two weeks to work on each task. The presentation of your work should last about 10 minutes.
The following are the tasks you will have to choose from…let’s get it started!
1. task: Why do people dance? Is it just an entertainment or it’s something more?
2. task: Let’s concentrate on Irish dance…how did it develop? Dive into the past to find it out. Have also a look at the names of the Irish dance steps and explain why they are so involving.
3. task: Look for the dates and the reasons behind the major Irish dance events in Ireland and all over the world, when everywhere is lit up green.
4. task: Find out what “Riverdance” is and why it is defined “The International Irish Dancing Phenomenon”, then pick up 3-4 themes of it and describe them.
Please let us know the topic you have chosen by 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Procedure:
Surf the web and extract the main information about your topic.
Brainstorm with one another and decide what is relevant.
Think of a scheme for organizing the information you want to convey.
Feel free to use pictures, videos, quotations, tables and/or other tools to improve your contribution to the chosen topic.
Be clear, simple and direct.
Use soft colours.
Prepare a speech to go along with your presentation to the class. Your speech should be divided into segments according to the numbers of the participants at your group so that each and every one of you will have the chance to practice in front of the class.
Good luck students!
Evaluation:
Both work in the classroom and at home will be evaluated
The parents have been asked for “liberatoria”
